How to Choose the Right Road Marking Paint in Malaysia: Thermoplastic, Solventborne, Waterborne & Polyurethane Explained

Choosing the right road marking material is not always easy. Malaysia’s tropical climate, heavy rainfall, and high-traffic roads can wear down markings faster than expected. Because of this, different projects call for different coating systems — and each one offers unique strengths.

This guide breaks down the four main options used in Malaysia: thermoplastic, solventborne (Single component), waterborne (Single component), and polyurethane (Two component). With this, contractors, consultants, and facility owners can make more informed choices.

1. Thermoplastic Road Marking Paint — Malaysia’s Most Preferred Choice

Thermoplastic remains the top choice in Malaysia for highways, municipal roads, and long-distance routes.
Here’s why:

  • Thick application (around 2 mm) gives excellent visibility and durability
  • Long-lasting performance reduces repainting frequency
  • Cost-efficient over the product lifetime
  • Good reflectivity when mixed with glass beads

However, thermoplastic is not a simple “paint.” It requires:

  • Specialized preheaters
  • Hot kettle machines
  • Well-trained applicators
  • Strict temperature control

Because of this, thermoplastic is not ideal for small areas or quick repair work, but unbeatable for long stretches of road.

2. Solventborne Roadline Paint — The Standard Liquid Option

Solventborne roadline paint (such as Crimson Thermoplastic Acrylic Roadline Paint) is widely used for:

  • Parking lots
  • Factory floors
  • Small municipal road markings
  • Temporary road works

It is easier to apply compared to thermoplastic. It dries reasonably fast and performs well on both asphalt and concrete. While it may not last as long as thermoplastic, it is:

  • More flexible
  • Cost-effective upfront
  • Suitable for simple equipment setups (spray, brush, roller)

This makes solventborne the practical choice where specialised thermoplastic machines are not required.

3. Waterborne Fast-Dry Acrylic — Best for Speed & Eco-Friendliness

Waterborne roadline paint is becoming more popular in Malaysia due to:

  • Very fast drying (ideal for quick reopening)
  • Low odour and low VOC
  • Easy cleanup using only water

While its durability is lower than thermoplastic or polyurethane, waterborne works well for:

  • Urban roads needing fast traffic reopening
  • Schools, pedestrian crossings, bicycle lanes
  • Indoor or sheltered areas

Its eco-friendly profile makes it suitable for projects with sustainability requirements.

4. Polyurethane Road Marking & Floor Coating — Premium Durability

Two-component (2k) Polyurethane is known for its:

  • Superior abrasion resistance
  • Excellent UV stability
  • Long-term colour retention

While it is not commonly used for long road stretches, it is perfect for:

  • Outdoor logo markings
  • High-wear industrial floors
  • Safety zones and walkways
  • Car parks requiring premium durability

If visibility and long-term colour quality are priority, polyurethane is the best-performing option among liquid coatings. Check out our previous post about why Polyurethane paint is recommended for outdoor marking at here.

Final Thoughts

There is no single “best” material — the right choice depends on the project.
